A Loving Husband

A Loving Husband

Outline: A light story of an older dotting husband wanting to please his young wife

Fred and Susie met at the village fete. He'd seen her often in the village, but never spoken to her other than say hello. He was an older man who'd  remained a batchelor, looking after the farm after his father died. His friends used to joke with him about finding a wife. He liked Susie a lot, but never thought that she'd be interested in him. She'd lost her husband very early and Fred thought that she'd be looking for a younger man. In chatting about various things, they  found that they had a common passion. They loved animals.

Her interest in animals was music to his ear especially as he could have done with some help. "You know Susie, if you have the time, maybe you could come to the farm from time to time. We could also take the ponies out if you like riding," he said.

"That would be nice Fred, I love horses; mind you I can't ride very well," she answered.

"I shouldn't worry about that Susie, we'll just trot around; It will be fun."

"Alright then let's try it. I can come tomorrow if you like."

Susie went and quickly settled into the routine of the farm. Riding with Fred became a regular event. She loved to go out in the open country. They chatted as they rode, and little by little she became fond of Fred. He was a  kind and patient man easy to get on with. As her riding gradually improved, she became a little careless which was understandable in the circumstances. One day, the inevitable happened. Her horse was frightened by some noise and reared up throwing her off. Fortunately, she fell on soft ground, but Fred picked her up holding her close to him.

"Are you hurt Susie?" Fred asked.

"No, nothing broken I think, just a little sore though."

This was a good excuse for Fred to hold her tighter  and to his surprise and joy, she responded putting her head in his lap and closing her eyes. He knew that this was the moment and he hesitantly blurted out the words. "This may come as a surprise Susie, but here goes. I'd be a very happy man if you moved to the farm permanently."

"Are you saying what I think you are saying Fred Jones?"

"And what do you think that I am saying then dear?"

She hesitated then beamed. Fred was in his late fifties and she was only 35 but difference in age was not important to her, he was mature and she felt good in his company.

"You want me to come and live with you as your mistress?"

"I didn't mean that Susie, I'm asking you to marry me!"

"Oh Fred, you lovely darling, I'm not sure that I'm ready or that you are. Have you considered it carefully?"

"Yes, for a long time, but it was difficult to bring it up in case you got angry and left."

The wedding was a grand affair, and people came from near and far. After their honeymoon they settled into a happy routine, that is until one morning when lying in bed, she felt a sharp pain in her lower back. It radiated down her thigh to her lower leg muscles. She thought that  it must have been due to  her fall from the horse.

"What's the matter angel? What happened?" He asked, seeing that she was in pain.

"I can't move," she whispered, "I can't move my leg. I've a terrible pain coming from my hip."

"I'll call the doctor right away" he said as he picked up the phone. She was now flat on her back. Even a small movement of her hips would trigger the throbbing pain. He called the doctor's office.

"Dr.Edwards is away I'm afraid Mr.Jones, his replacement will come as soon as he can. He's taking surgery right now but won't be long, " said the receptionist. Fred placed some pillows under his wife's  knee to relieve the pressure from her legs, and put a hot water bottle where it hurt. That was all he could think of as he fretted over her. After what seemed like ages, they heard the rustle of gravel outside as a car approached the front. This must be the doctor at last he thought as he rushed out to greet him. He saw a young man approach rather hesitantly dressed in a suit and carrying a bag.

" I thought you'd never come," Fred said.

" But..." The young man tried to say something, but was quickly interrupted by the farmer as he took him to the bedroom.

"Please do something to stop the pain . I can't bear seeing her suffer."

"Oh my God! He really thinks that I'm the doctor; he won't have it otherwise," thought the young salesman. His first aid training now came to the fore. It was obvious that the woman was suffering every time she tried to move and without further talk the young man took off his coat, rolled up his sleeves and rubbed his hands to warm them before lifting the girl's nightdress to feel her leg and see exactly where the pain was. In the past he'd sold electronic massage machines used to relieve pain and he'd learned a little about where the probes were placed to provide the signals. He muttered a prayer and then turned to the husband:

"Please go see if you have ice packs in your freezer. I'll see what I can do here."

The young man started gently massaging the point where the pain was at its strongest.

"Ouch it hurts." She felt a sensation of both pleasure and pain as he pressed his fingers on her back.
"I can see you're not the doctor!" she said seeing him hesitate in using his hands on her legs.

"No, I am not but your husband wouldn't have it any other way. I tried to tell him.  I am a farm machinery salesman but I had no chance." Just then the door bell rang. "Heck, I've got to get out of here quickly, that'll be the real doctor" he said as he made for the window that opened to the yard behind the house. The woman understood but she was grateful for his intervention.

Her husband was now talking heatedly with a man in the hall. "So if you're the doctor who's in there with my wife?  Where is he? Where's that b****?"  He looked at the open window but quickly came back to the urgent business at hand.

The doctor came up to Susie, and took her pulse. She told the doctor, "I had some pain low down on my back, but it's little better now."

"A disc is rubbing against the big nerve and it's inflamed. I'll leave some pain killers and some cream for your husband to massage the leg, meantime you need to rest. It's nothing serious but you'll need to stay in bed for a while," the doctor said as he packed his instruments in his bag.

Some days later when the pain finally subsided and she could get up, they went to town to celebrate. As they were walking down the High Street, Susie turned to her husband: "Darling, don't look now but I think I just saw the young man who massaged my leg."

"Where's the rascal? I'll kill him for daring to put his hands on you."

"Yes darling I know, but he seemed to know what he was doing. He managed to relieve the pain so quickly. Maybe we should thank him instead."

He thought for an instant and wanting to please his young wife, he agreed. "Maybe you're right, I'll speak to him."

As soon as the young man caught sight of him, he made to go. "No don't go, you're the chap that I mistook for the doctor aren't you? Well you did a good job and I want to thank you."

"It was nothing really, I'd come to show you some new automatic milking equipment but you didn't give me a chance. How's your wife by the way?"

"She's right here, and would like to thank you personally."

Farmer Jones invited the young man to join them for lunch. Then they asked him back to the farm and looked over his equipment brochures. They found him pretty pleasant and useful and insisted that he stay with them whenever he was in the area which he started doing frequently to Susie's delight. A few months later she had some happy news for her husband.

"Darling I'm going to have a baby, the doctor confirmed it." He looked at her, smothered her with kisses, and lifted her off her feet.

"That's great news angel, I'm so lucky! I never thought that I'll ever be a father!
